Overview

This guidebook, illustrated with atmospheric photographs, fascinating new reconstructions and historic images includes a full tour and history of Barnard Castle, as well as the nearby English Heritage sites of Bowes Castle and Egglestone Abbey. The striking ruins of Barnard Castle stand on the edge of a cliff overlooking the river Tees. A castle was first built here by the Balliol family in the 1090s and it takes its name from Bernard de Balliol who rebuilt it in stone in the 12th century. Later, it was acquired by Richard III, whose device of a boar remains carved into a lintel overlooking the river.
