Overview

This guidebook explores the architecture, history and royal connections of Hailes Abbey, which came to national prominence in the late 13th century. At that time the abbey had been presented with a valuable relic: blood shed by Christ on the Cross, and so became a hugely important pilgrimage destination. The guidebook includes a tour of the remains of the Cistercian abbey and examines written sources to discover more about the daily lives of its monks and the significance of its relic. It contains striking photography, as well as maps, plans and reconstructions, which bring this history of this important and atmospheric site to life.
