Overview

This guidebook presents a detailed description of the medieval timber-framed house at 58 French Street, Southampton, and highlights its importance as one of the earliest surviving merchants' houses in England. Built in about 1290, it has never been substantially altered or rebuilt, and miraculously survived wartime bombing in 1940. The guide also includes an informative history of medieval Southampton and an account of the painstaking work to return the house to its original form.
