Overview

Illustrated throughout with plans, detailed reconstruction drawings and photographs, this guidebook presents a tour and history of Lyddington Bede House. It shows how the elegant house is the surviving wing of a medieval rural palace of the Bishops of Lincoln, who were drawn to the area for its hunting and its proximity to the royal forest of Rockingham, where Norman kings enjoyed the hunt. In 1600 the surviving building became an alms house, later known as the Bede House, which housed pensioners for over 300 years.
